A Sort Of Homecoming

Mojo once described Enormous as ‘Potential nouveau powerpop colossi’ but on the brink of greatness, the nucleus split and caused two cases of insanity, drug addictions, broken hearts, ones demise in a bizarre boating accident and the others resurface in Mansfield’s Town Mill headlining with B-Movie on this sell out Thursday night.

Front man Davy Lawrence (one-time member of Slaughterhouse 5) enters the stage with a cool calm, ”Something in my heart tells me you know…” as the bass adds depth to his broad croon and the horns light up the room with a vibrant swell. “Lets Run Away Together” has morphed from nouveau powerpop to an in-tune, big sound vintage classic with the forlorn spirit of immortal country. Everything’s the same – music from the heart, music from the blues with tales of lost love but Strummer has met Orbison who hitched a cloud with Cash who was watching over Clem Snide and Richard Hawley’s deliciously melancholy tru-country vibe.

Famed for their three minute power-pieces, the sentiment of “My Type” is guilty of sounding at least a little dated but “Here Comes That Girl Again” takes on a whole new swing.

B-Movie take the stage with an air of authority and an arrogant late entry but complete with projector and slide show leave me to concede they have a coolness which undertook me back in the day. Their 80’s electro sound would resonate in the current climate of Hot Chip and MGMT if only the drummer had some regard for metronomy. “Nowhere girl, your living in a dream…” Still sounding fresh, B-Movie look like they’d been dressed from the wardrobe of Blade Runner and vintage synths calve out a somber soundscape which leave me transfixed.

Marilyn Dreams jogs another memory which awakes me from this image induced overload and I make for the door. If B-Movie had character they would be regarded as gods and I had forgotten their solemn similarities to Joy Division but can you imagine Joy Division without Curtis? Imagine Joy Division without individuality and you would have B-Movie but don’t trust me, trust this full house of advent lovers who wont allow me to escape this precious drone. B-Movies place in history will happen in two years time when Nowhere Girl gets picked up for a car commercial.
