"I
don’t like stadium gigs. The futility of
spending most of the day stuck in traffic only
to queue for hours, buy stupid T-shirts I don’t
want, file for overpriced warm beer from a plastic
glass and then watch a tiny speck of a person
I can only assume is the individual I’d
spent fifty quid to see is crazy".
"So
what exactly do you want?" the sisters request.
"Well,
I’m not gonna watch a tribute band. I’m
too cool for that and I would be grateful if you
could remove that patronizing tone"
"So
what exactly do you want?" they resound with
a tilted smirk.
"I want
to see David Bowie in a bar, a choice of beers,
a few flashing lights and a decent sound system.
Too much to ask?"
A unified
sneer "then stop being an idiot" and
they’re gone…
So the Boston
Burger Company is a new bar and restaurant in
Mansfield. It’s a bit Hard Rock Café,
a tad more up-market, slanting towards the 80’s
and adorned with nostalgic memorabilia one-step
away from the norm. Talking Heads "True Stories"
replaces Meat Loaf clichés, Dylans "Planet
Waves" drawers you in and the colours of XTC’s "Wires" make this place
a little cooler than the rest.
But we’re
here for the music and we get "Absolute Bowie".
An all-out rock"n"roll 5-piece fronted
by someone who looks a lot like, well David Bowie.
Bowie means much, at the age of twelve my first
love preached tales of Ziggy Stardust, bisexuality
and Hunky Dory. I never reached first base, truth
is she scared me and by the time I’d stopped
running it was too late but that’s where
I found Aladdin Sane..
Tonight,
this is David Bowie; he believes it and so do
I.
" When you're a boy, you can wear a uniform".
"John, I'm only dancing. She turns me on".
"Oh you pretty things. Don’t you know
you’re driving your mamas and papas insane".
"Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes (Turn and face the strain)"
" We can be heroes-just for one day"
" There’s a starman waiting in the
sky. He’s told us not to blow it. Cause
he knows its all worthwhile". Never stop
believing.
And that’s
the way it went. Classic tune after classic tune
that we’ve never stopped listening to. Bowie
will be with us for an eternity either in memory,
influence, remix or sample but tonight was old
school; we were in the Rainbow Rooms getting deep
down and dirty. Tonight David Bowie is taking
a break and is back to his roots, he’s dug
out an old pair of tights and is heavy on the
make-up. Two one-hour sets, a costume change and
time to replenish beer supplies without missing
a jot. If I wasn’t such an pretentious twat
I could have more great nights like these.
